A rarely seen operation is SC Public Railways' East Cooper & Berkeley. Running between Cainhoy and State Jct., SC, this line has historically been nocturnal and photographable only on long days of summer. Here, train 800 is leaving Charity Church, SC for State Jct.

VSRR 2008 prepares to depart the NS interchange at Burkeville, VA with 14 coal loads for Clarksville, VA.  The Co-Gen plant at Clarksville is the sole shipper on the line at present.

Sebring Turn traverses the sharp curve at Sugarton, FL with a cane burn visible in the background. Fall is a very busy time for the SCFE during the height of sugar cane harvest.

After a nocturnal turn to Sebring, a fresh crew meets the train at Sugarton. Ex IC GP11's now form the bulk of SCFE's roster.

Nash County Rwy GP10 8047 leads a local west to Nashville passing Westry, NC on a cool and cloudy April morning.

90 lb jointed rail almost 100 years old stacked at Roxobel, NC for pickup after recent replacement to handle the heavy Nucor trains.

NCVA southbound at George, NC with 54 cars enroute to Nucor Steel. The plant has been a boon for this line, taking it from some 1800 cars ayear to over 10,000 now.

PRYL 1001 passes an eclectic South Carolina scene, framed by Spanish moss swinging from a Live Oak tree. Unfortunately, these rails fell silent November 25, 2003 when the SC Public Railways ceased operations on this line.

After the Extra 90 east has spotted Circle S, SW1200 98 gets some needed attention for a malfunctioning sander. The power will head back west to Knox to pick up another cut of loads for Circle S.

Great Walton GP9 6580 picks up a lone pulpwood flat at the CSX interchange in Covington, GA for the trip south to Newborn.  6580 is the only Great Walton painted locomotive at the present time.

The tough grade at Richburg proves too much for the Extra 90 east. With a little help from #14, the train makes the grade and treats the photographer to a 7 endcab lashup. With the arrival of larger power in the form of GP38-2's in 2003, scenes like this will be seldom, if ever, repeated.

A Pickens Railroad local arrives at Belton, SC to interchange with CSX.  With a fleet of six U18B’s of CSX heritage, the Pickens is now the largest operator of this locomotive type.

Believe it or not, this photo was taken in the year 2000.  The Great Walton RR has not painted most of their locomotive fleet, allowing visitors to literally take a trip back many years in railroad history.

An early summer morning finds the Georgia Southwestern freight tied up at Buena Vista, GA waiting to make its return to Smithville, GA.  At the time this photo was taken, Railtex owned the GSWR.  Shortly after, RailAmerica took over and after a brief stint, spun the company off to private ownership.

The Hartwell RR is owned by the Great Walton and hosts an eclectic assortment of locomotives, as well.   The Toccoa local is tied up at Lavonia, GA with a CNW GP7, RF&P GP35 and HRT GP30.  Proof that shortlines can in fact take you back in time!

Georgia Northeastern GP35 372 at Tate, GA. This unit was wrecked in a runaway accident and has since left the roster. It was sold to the Hartwell RR as a parts source.

On a warm spring morning, Great Walton RR’s Monroe local is making a pick up at the CSX interchange in Social Circle, GA.  These geeps continue to soldier on to the present day in paint schemes they have worn for many years.
